CULTURALLY-SENSITIVE + SOCIAL JUSTICE-INFORMED THERAPY

Do you relate to this?

You’ve been trying to hold it all together (and take care of everyone else, as you’re so used to doing)… but deep down, it’s all starting to get to you.

It feels like no one actually sees you… much less understands you.

Navigating the world as a person of color has been a complicated and stressful experience. There’s the constant questioning in your head…

Who am I? Where do I belong? Is it safe to be myself here…? What about over there?

Your nervous system feels like a tangled mess of frayed wires.

It’s been so long since you’ve truly relaxed, the feeling is a distant memory at this point.

The world — society, really — stresses you out. You’ve heard more microaggressions than you can count.

“Wow! You’re so {insert backhanded compliment} for a {insert identity}!”

“Okay, but where are REALLY from?”

As much as you try to shake it off, these moments stick with you. The words get under your skin and feel like a hundred mosquito bites itching at once.

It’s hard to know whether to roll your eyes or cry — so sometimes, you end up doing both at the same time.

You feel like you’re wearing a mask everywhere you go.

You’re a natural at code-switching — and while it’s gotten you far in life, a part of you is sad that you have to do it at all. Wouldn’t it be nice to just… be yourself? Your whole, multifaceted, unfiltered self?

It’s honestly starting to hurt your brain, this precarious balance between fitting in and staying true to who you are.

Depending on the social situation, you feel either hypervisible or invisible — as if everyone’s staring at you like a museum exhibit, or they’re looking right through you.

You’re tired of explaining yourself — to the colleagues who make your workplace a minefield of microaggressions…

to the random stranger who insists on knowing where you’re REALLY from

to the friends who try to sympathize, but don’t really get it.

Maybe you even ended up educating your last therapist about the realities of your experiences… because they also didn’t get it. If there were a penny for every act of emotional labor you’ve done for free… well, let’s just say you could build a sanctuary of self-care.

There are days where you feel angry, tired, and scared, all at once. The state of the world weighs heavy on your heart.

I want you to know that you don’t have to carry this weight alone.

You’re looking for a space where you feel comfortable to be yourself.

Where you can breathe a sigh of relief because finally, the hurting parts of you feel seen.

Where you can truly, deeply heal.

You’ve come to the right place.

I’m Liz, and I’d love to support you.

Therapy with me feels warm and grounding… like a cup of tea.

As a holistic therapist, I take care to get to know all parts of you — your mental health, physical health, relationships, identities, communities, spiritual considerations, and cultural factors — so that we can address the whole picture.

Here’s what we might do in our work together.

  • explore your identities, values, and life experiences

  • navigate the intersections between race, ethnicity, culture, class, gender, sexuality, religion, dis/ability, nationality, neurotype, and other social locations

  • process significant experiences, from personal to global events

  • acknowledge and tend to the pains of intergenerational trauma

  • get to know all parts of you, helping you to feel more comfortable, confident, and connected to yourself

  • use brain-body therapies, such as EMDR & IFS, to heal & restore your nervous system

Experience healing from the inside out.

Therapy can help you:

make nuanced meaning of your identities + values

process + heal from stress, anxiety, and trauma

connect deeply with yourself + build self-trust

Welcome to a culturally sensitive & social justice-informed healing space.

I want to acknowledge that while therapy cannot erase systemic oppression — a pervasive global issue with deep institutional and ideological roots — it can offer a space to process and cope with distress caused by harmful environments and interactions. I will not try to convince you that everything is okay in the world, or that self-care is the cure for injustice — because it’s not. When it comes to collective, systemic injuries, to over-emphasize individual mental health is to miss the bigger picture.

My intention is to be with you in your experiences as a fellow human. Together, we can go toward the discomfort and process what’s happening in the world and how it’s impacting you. Importantly, I hope that our therapeutic relationship can be a resource for you — an anchor to your true self; a space of restoration, growth, and healing — in the wake of life’s challenges.

Trauma-informed psychology asks, what happened to you?

Cultural psychology asks, what happened to your people?

Liberation psychology asks, and what continues to happen to you and to your people?

FAQs

  • Clients describe me as down-to-earth. I want therapy to feel grounded & approachable for you — not stuffy & overly serious all the time. I draw from a range of healing modalities, ancient & modern, to create a therapy plan that is personalized to you — and always in collaboration with you.

On a personal note: I’m not your typical “blank slate” therapist. I’m a highly sensitive, neurodivergent woman of color; Chinese American, second-generation immigrant. I recognize that my experiences may or may not overlap with yours, and that I benefit from privileges within my identities (cisgender, currently able-bodied, U.S. citizenship).

You can expect me to be fully present with you as my authentic self. I welcome clients of all backgrounds. Whether we share the same identities or not, I honor you as the expert of your experience and would be grateful to work with you.

  • EMDR and IFS therapy are transformative therapies that heal the brain & body. They’re a powerful combination for addressing stress, anxiety, and trauma (including childhood, sexual, and intergenerational trauma).

IFS helps you understand your inner world, identifying parts of you that carry pain & grief, and allowing you to safely unburden these parts. By the end of IFS therapy, clients report feeling more connected & confident in themselves.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, audio tones, and self-tapping) to help you process distressing memories, releasing their emotional sting from your nervous system. By the end of EMDR therapy, client report feeling refreshed & relieved, able to fully exhale & move forward from the past.

  • Absolutely! As a neurodiversity-affirming therapist, I can support you in exploring the possibility of neurodivergence. Whether you’re curious about autism, high sensitivity (HSP), ADHD, or any other neurotype, we can explore what neurodivergence means for you, what it feels like to be you, and what it looks like to navigate the world in a way that honors your authentic Self.

We may also explore how neurodivergence intersects with other parts of your identity — including gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, culture, ability, and more.

  • Decolonized therapy is a framework that acknowledges the impact of colonization, historical trauma, and ongoing oppression on individual & community mental health. It recognizes that the field of psychotherapy was not designed with all brains, bodies, identities, and cultures in mind — and therefore challenges the universality of Western therapy models.

Decolonized therapy adjusts the therapy process to match the needs of each individual, with awareness of cultural nuances & the challenges faced by marginalized identities. It centers inclusivity, accessibility, justice, and equity.

As a human being who is in an ongoing process of decolonizing my mind, here’s how decolonized therapy looks like in my practice:

    • listening to the body (where our somatic + intergenerational wisdom lives)

    • letting ourselves feel anger, rage, and grief toward injustice, and using it as a healthy catalyst toward collective action

    • building self-trust (in a world that teaches us to look outside ourselves for the answers)

    • connecting with community

    • naming the elephants in the room — power, privilege, oppression — and having honest conversations about their impact

    • being open to un-learning & re-learning, with humility & beginner’s mind

  • Our sessions take place online, through a secure video-conferencing platform.

This allows you to experience therapy from the comfort and privacy of your home, decreasing commute times and scheduling conflicts.

  • The number of sessions you’ll need is unique to your situation. Some people find relief from specific concerns within 6-12 weekly sessions. Others stay on longer, using therapy as a consistent space for healing and introspection.

If a faster pace aligns with your preferences, we can explore intensive therapy options, where we condense the work into a shorter timeframe. Click HERE to learn more about intensives.

It’s important to find a pace that feels comfortable for you. To get a more specific idea of your potential timeframe, I encourage you to schedule a free consultation, where we can discuss your needs and goals.

  • The first step is to schedule a free 15-min consult. We’ll get to know each other and confirm if we’re a great fit to work together.
